In 2012, TD Bank of the Midlands and the Center came together to build a strong partnership and one that continues into 2013. On August 2, 2012 the Center celebrated its 10 year anniversary by hosting a luncheon called "Decade of Dads" in The Zone at Williams-Brice Stadium. Nearly 400 people attended the event including representatives from TD Bank a sponsor of the event, Sisters of Charity Foundation of SC Board member David Lominack, Upstate/Midlands market president and Karen Smith regional vice president of the midlands.
Not long after Decade of Dads, Karen Smith reached out to the Center with a wonderful partnership opportunity. Each year TD Bank selects a local non-profit as its beneficiary for their existing partnership with the University of South Carolina Gamecocks football team. The premise of the partnership was that every time the Gamecocks scored a touchdown, TD Bank would make a donation to the Center. After the season ended, TD presented the Center with a check for $7,500. In addition to the donations for touchdowns TD Bank donated two tickets for every home football game for a father and their child.
When USC took on the Missouri Tigers, Michael Burnside, a participant of the Midlands Fatherhood Coalition was able to take in the game with his son Denasjee. "This is the first time I've had the opportunity to attend a South Carolina game. With me recently gaining employment and my son in school, I rarely have as much time to hang out with him," Michael said.
"When Mr. Rudolph called me and told me he had two tickets for me and my son to go to the game, I was surprised and excited," mentioned Michael. For Rudolph Walker, program specialist - Fairfield site, it was an easy decision to offer the tickets to Michael. "First and foremost, he is dependable and honest. He is very involved with his children and wants to be that physical presence in their lives. He is just a hard working young man trying to change his position and provide for his children, " Rudolph said of Michael.
Michael took in the moments of the game, cherishing every minute of his first USC game and the special moments with his son. "It was just an awesome time. It is great for them (TD Bank) to express concern for fathers that may be going through a tough time. I'm glad they gave me an opportunity to enjoy a game with Denasjee," said Michael.
Also, during the year representatives from TD Bank spoke to the Center and local fatherhood programs about the benefits of opening an account with TD. After Deborah Azzarito's presentation during group session at the Midlands Fatherhood Coalition, seven accounts were opened by program staff and participants.
The Center is grateful for the partnership with TD Bank and is thankful for their continued support. The Center looks forward to working with TD Bank for many years to come.
