Introducing ourselves to Florence

Our fatherhood programs are moving rapidly to expand to serve all of South Carolina.

On Feb. 17, Midlands Fatherhood Coalition introduced itself to Sumter. The following Wednesday, Man 2 Man did the same at the beautiful county library in Florence.

There was a good turnout of community leaders, despite threatening weather.

While the services are available to most noncustodial fathers, the initiative serves also as an alternative to incarceration program. It focuses on helping those who fail to pay child support avoid incarceration and overcome barriers to provide emotional and financial support to their children.

Man 2 Man is part of a network of fatherhood programs reaching across the state that are supported and coordinated by the South Carolina Center for Fathers and Families in Columbia.

The programs originated as a way to address poverty. There were services for mothers and children but not many for fathers, said Pat Littlejohn, executive director for the S.C. Center for Fathers and Families...
